LIGHT THE DARKNESS: HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
Added on 15 December 2023
FISHBURN PARISH COUNCIL will mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) by lighting The Queen Elizabeth II Beacon of Hope on Saturday 27th January 2024 at 6:00 p.m. A flame of remembrance will burn for 15 minutes in a powerful moment of commemoration and solidarity.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 is ‘Fragility of Freedom’. “That is when the trouble started for the Jews. Our freedom was severely restricted by a series of anti-Jewish decrees” – Anne Frank, diary entry, Saturday 20 June, 1942 – reflecting back on May 1940 when the Germans arrived in the Netherlands.
As stated by parish councillor Stephen Tinkler, who will be lighting the beacon on behalf of Fishburn Parish Council: “We are putting aside a moment to come together to remember, to learn about the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution, and the genocides that followed in the hope that there may be one day in the future with no genocide. We learn more about the past, we empathise with others today, and we take action for a better future”.
Members of the public are welcome to attend and observe the lighting of the beacon at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday 27th January 2024.
